Inspired by what he calls “interruptions in the landscape,” award winning Seattle artist Robert Yoder creates collages of mixed media using common art materials such as paper, graphite and ink combined with industrial materials including vinyl adhesive films and reflective tapes. Yoder’s work references landscape and architecture as they seemingly collide to compete for attention. “Interruptions in the landscape engage my attention, whether it is the lone blade of grass in the center of a parking lot, or the over-scaled house surrounded by controlled nature,” Yoder says. “They are each out of place, yet they rely upon their surroundings to make themselves distinct.” Yoder’s work has been featured in dozens of exhibits across the country, and it is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Seattle Art Museum, Amgen, Microsoft, Nike, Intuit, Hewlett Packard, Citizens Bank Corporation and fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez. Yoder has earned numerous awards and honors, including a 2005 award from the University of Washington School of Art, a Seattle Collects Purchase Award and a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant. He says one of his most exciting career highlights was at his first show at a New York gallery when every single piece was sold out in the two days before the exhibit opened. Yoder lives and works in Seattle, Washington, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Washington.
